Fabian Picardo could be Joe Bossano's successor

GIBRALTAR (Source: GibChronicle) Unwavering in his hallmark of sticking to his plans, Opposition Leader Joe Bossano yesterday sparked off a new wave of political excitement by repeating to GBC radio what he said a year ago. He will not be standing for the leadership of the GSLP but he will be seeking to be a candidate standing alongside the person who his party elects to the leadership. All will be revealed from April 6, the closing date for nominations for the leadership and five other posts in the executive committee. The actual decision comes at the AGM on April 20. But Fabian Picardo MP now seems almost certain to lead the GSLP/Liberal Alliance at the next General Election, favourite dates for which run from June 2 to October 27 even though in theory the election could go into the New Year of 2012.>Mr Bossano would not be drawn into stating what the key issues or tactics would be. But he did say "if an election is called tomorrow we are ready for it." The political lion thinks that the election will be in October.
Since the last election Bossano has dedicated himself to building up the party machinery, making sure that, unlike the last time, it is ready to mobilise. "It was not the candidates, not the delivery nor the policies. We just were not ready to mobilise," he says of the last election. He adds that scarcely a week has gone past without him meeting activists and he is particularly emphatic about the role he believes the youth section of the GSLP will play.

"We have not been this ready for an election since 1988," he says.

With Fabian Picardo having thrown his hat in the ring for the leadership last summer, GBC reported yesterday that the other likely contender, Gilbert Licudi, has told them that he will not be putting his name forward at this time.

Fabian Picardo MP who has restated that he will be seeking the leadership told GBC that he would welcome a contest. Mr Bossano has made clear that neither he nor the executive will publically back any particular candidate if there is a contest.

Last summer Mr Picardo told the Chronicle that he was very confident that the party will back him and select him to lead it at the next general election. He was equally confident that he has the support of Liberal Leader Dr Joseph Garcia and that it will be an Alliance that they offer. And he emphasised that Mr Bossano would be a key part of a team.

"Given what I have seen up to now of what the GSD are prepared to do in order to try and commence a character assassination of me and some of my colleagues, I am convinced that the GSD is going to take this election down into the gutter," he said then.
