PC City store opens on same day firm pulled plug on Spanish venture

SPAIN (Agencies) We announced that PC City was closing down operations in Spain on Friday (see item here). But a brand new shop in A Coruña, Galicia, got caught with its computers down. Barely half an hour after the latest PC City store opening, the company announced its decision to end its Spanish operations and leave the market. The decision by the British multinational Dixons Retail to close its 33 stores in Spain will leave 1,224 workers out of a job. The last of the popular computer superstores opened on Thursday at 10am at Marineda City, Spain's largest shopping mall. The manager of the A Coruña store, which employed 22 workers aged around 30, declined to comment, but she did express disappointment at losing her job after just a few weeks. Company spokesman Adolfo Lorenzo said the firm had been in Spain for over a decade but only made profits in 2006 and 2007.
