GIBRALTAR (Press release) The Government has received the news of next year’s Royal Visit to Gibraltar with great satisfaction. Chief Minister Fabian Picardo says the announcement by Buckingham Palace that the Earl and Countess of Wessex will come to Gibraltar to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee will be welcomed with tremendous pride and joy by the Gibraltarians. Although the timing of the visit has yet to be announced, preparations will soon commence to ensure the Royal Visit is a memorable event for the Royal Couple and everyone on the Rock, says a Government press release dated yesterday. In another communique the Governor, Sir Adrian Johns, also welcomed the announcement by Buckingham Palace.>>>
During the Diamond Jubilee year in 2012, members of the Royal Family will visit all the realms (countries where the Queen is the Head of State) , as well as a number of other Commonwealth countries, the Crown Dependencies (Channel Islands and Isle of Man) and selected Overseas Territories. The Queen herself will travel widely within the United Kingdom.
Sir Adrian said “I am delighted that Gibraltar will form part of this series of Royal Visits to mark the Diamond Jubilee. The visit of the Earl and Countess of Wessex will be an important element in Gibraltar’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations.”
During 2012 the Earl and Countess of Wessex will also visit Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, Antigua and Barbuda, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada and the Overseas Territory of Montserrat.
Other Territories included in the programme are the British Virgin Islands (Duke of Gloucester) and the Falkland Islands (Duke of Kent).
