Last night for this year's Workshops for Peace: tears for the kids

This year we only made it to the last night of this great project. This was the 11th edition of San Pablo de Buceite's magnificent effort that this year brought in some 180 kids from places like Cuba, Morocco, the Saharawi refugee encampments in Algeria and from various parts of Spain. Workshops went on for a a good fifteen days in all kinds of arts and crafts, ranging from pottery and photography to symphony orchestra and band, from theatre to percussion, from voice to foam rubber, and more. It's hard to describe the feeling we always have when it comes to the end - but the tears shed by the kids who'd never met each other and have become fast friends, not knowing if they'll ever meet again ... those tears say it all. (On a more political note: If this project is lost for any childish political reason, the politicians involved should be lined up and given a rope with which to hang themselves. The project desperately needs international repercussion - if you can help, or know someone who can, please let us know, no matter how small that help might be. It is vital for its continuation.)

Crafts fair in Castellar coming up

CASTELLAR The fast-moving Jimenart Arts & Crafts society is holding a crafts show on the main square in  CASTELLAR NUEVO, on Sunday, June 9. Live music, and wine tasting, and other beverage tastings are going on all day .. and, of course, lots of things to admire and buy. They recently held one in the square in Jimena, which was great success.

Spring Arts & Crafts market

JIMENA Next Sunday, March 17, Jimena's art association, Jimenart, is holding a Spring Fair crafts market in the main square, Plaza de la Constitución, starting at 11am. All kinds of arts and crafts will be available, from artwork to sculpture, new and used stuff, antiques. Plus things for kids of all ages, live music, bouncy castles and lots of surprises.

Leonard Cohen, 2011 Príncipe de Asturias for Literature

SPAIN (Agencies) The Prince of Asturias Prize is the highest civilian award Spain is able to give. This year's for Literature goes to songwriter, poet and novelist Leonard Cohen, 78, for "literary work that has influenced three generations," according to a statement from the jury. There were 32 candidates in this section; the finalists, aside from Leonard Cohen, were another Canadian, Alice Munro, and British novelist Ian McEwan. Cohen was also a candidate in the Arts section for his musical career, but this year's went to music director Riccardo Muti. Several prizes are yet to be decided but another one interesting to our readers is that awarded to Britain's Royal Society.
