Summer beach buses for inland villages

CAMPO DE GIBRALTAR As from next Saturday, 29, and until September 1, residents of San Pablo de Buceite, Jimena de la Frontera, San Martín del Tesorillo and Castellar will be able to come and go - on weekends - from the beach at Torreguadiaro during the day. The Transport Consortium of the Campo de Gibraltar has also approved a repeat of last year's successful 'night owl' service covering routes between La Línea - Algeciras and Algeciras - Tarifa, which starts at 21.45 and ends at 8.00 in the morning; the service is available now and ends on September 8. Bus company staff calls off indefinite strike for 21st

ALGECIRAS (Agencies) The unions representing personnel of the Grupo Ruiz bus company have called off a strike they had planned for Monday next. The reason behind the decision is that the company has ordered payment of wages for October, and a second payment for the extra wages of July. The strike would have affected not only the public transport in Algeciras, Los Barrios and La Línea but also transport at factories, schools and other special services.

Bus on Jerez-Algeciras run bursts into flames

JEREZ (EP) A bus on the Jerez-Algeciras line burst into flames at about 8.30pm last night. The incident occurred on the A-381, within the municipality of Jerez de la Frontera on Km 14.300 of the road. Fortunately no-one was hurt and some 40 passengers were quickly transferred to another vehicle. Witnesses reported flames coming out "between the motor and the luggage compartment". The alert came in to the 112 emergency number at 20.25, setting the emergency protocol into action. National Police, Guardia Civil, Bomberos and Ambulance services were at the scene shortly afterwards.

Bus company employees to stop work for non-payment of salaries; Algeciras and Los Barrios a

CAMPO DE GIBRALTAR (Agencies) Workers at CTM-Grupo Ruiz, the municipal and medium range bus company, have announced they are to stage an indefinite stoppage as from July 22 because they have not yet been paid their June salaries; they also fear that they will not be getting the extra half-annual payment due in July.  The stoppage will impact the urban bus services in Algeciras and Los Barrios, as well as the inter-urban ones, including the route to La Linea, and the services to the Guadiaro Valley on up to Jimena and San Pablo, plus any 'discretional' or pre-contracted services. The company says that the ayuntamientos are not paying them but they are nevertheless trying to negotiate loans to meet the salaries.

Buses re-routed to avoid stonings

ALGECIRAS (Agencies/Photo: EuropaSur) Local bus companies are fed up with a series of stonings in the El Saladillo area of Algeciras, the latest of which took place last Saturday. They have agreed to miss out that section of the N-351, which will add an average of ten minutes to their schedule. Such are their concerns that at a press conference yesterday, they refused to name the new route because "you never know what the vandals will do next," according to one company manager. They accuse the National and Local police of 'passing the buck', adding that despite many calls and that the stonings happen in a specific place at specific times, they have yet to see either police forces' vehicles anywhere near these spots.

Campo bus system cutting costs

CAMPO DE GIBRALTAR (Agencies) Following a report recently that most of the buses belonging to the Consorcio de Transportes del Campo de Gibraltar, the bus management consortium, are lacking seat belts even on relatively new vehicles (The response was to this was, "if the bus has them, you're obliged to use them, if not, not."), it has now ben decided to eliminate the Algeciras to Rota route from January 1, 2011, except in summer, as a cost-cutting measure to reduce losses. Another route cut out is the Algeciras-Tahivilla run, which affects travellers to Tarifa because there was a stop there on the way to Tahivilla. As compensation during the summer high season, the number of buses on the Algeciras-Tarifa route will be increased. Other measures proposed by the company, Comes, but not approved by the consortium (this time) included the partial elimination of service between Algeciras and Tarifa (11 weekly buses there and 11 back); between Algeciras and San Pablo de Buceite (5 and 5); La Línea and San Roque (29 / 29) and Los Barrios and La Línea (10 / 10).
