San Roque Museum opens at last

SAN ROQUE (Agencies) The President of the Junta de Andalucía, José Antonio Griñán, was the guest of honour at yesterday's opening of the San Roque Museum, an accomplishemnt after five years under renovation. After cutting the traditional ribbon, Griñán was given a guided tour of the two-story building on Calle San Felipe that houses a considerable collection of artifacts dating back to the earliest , prehistorical, settlers in the area. It also offers audio-visual items as well as, naturally archaeological pieces. A series of open-door workshops is planned for the near future and the museum is open every day except Monday, during the usual hours (including, no doubt, a long lunchtime break), but on weekends will be open only in the morning.

SAN ROQUE Although it has been ready since mid December, it was felt that January 4th was a better date for the inauguration of San Roque's museum. Located on Calle San Felipe, it has been over five years in the making. At a recent press conference, Mayor Juan Carlos Ruiz Boix announced that the inauguration tomorrow will be in the presence of the President of the Junta de Andalucía, José Antonio Griñán. Amongst other things, Ruiz Boix said he would work towards bringing back to San Roque the numerous museum-quality pieces of art and architecture, the latter from the Roman era Carteia site, that over the years have found their way to a variety of exhibition spaces all over Spain. Some of these illustrate the very first human settlement on the Guadarranque river.

Carmen Thyssen Museum opens in Málaga

MÁLAGA (Agencies) The new Carmen Thyssen Museum in Málaga is ready to open its doors inside the renovated Villalón Palace, next to Plaza de la Constitución, which is a five-minute walk from the Picasso Museum. The 230 paintings that hang from its walls have been loaned free of charge for 15 years by Baroness Carmen Thyssen, who also chairs the board of trustees and has spent the last two weeks personally overseeing every last detail of the project. The Spanish baroness, née Carmen Cervera, is a major patron of the arts, best known for the wing that houses part of her collection at the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum in Madrid. On the occasion of this new opening, she said the only profit she was getting out of it was the satisfaction of letting other people enjoy her artworks.>
