LA LÍNEA/GIBRALTAR The New York Times, via its sister paper the International Herald Tribune, published a report on Tuesday titled Southern Spain Tries to Cope with Economic Downturn in which it uses the situation in La Línea as an example of the financial situation in Spain, concentrating nevertheless on Southern Spain. "The planned levy has been condemned by Madrid and London, which governs Gibraltar, in a rare show of British-Spanish unity over the territory. Still, La Línea’s mayor, Alejandro Sánchez, said he would defend the charge before European Union courts, if required, as part of broader efforts to help alleviate La Línea’s economic downturn," says the paper, adding rather perspicaciously, “Any mayor who cannot present some exciting new projects to the voters next May will face a very ugly situation,” quoting a senior council member in Cádiz. Well worth a read.
