Tax man's new tactics: 'Name & Shame'

GIBRALTAR (GibChronicle) They’ve had letters, warnings and detailed information about the PAYE and Social Insurance they have either failed to pay or not even deducted from staff. In the next few weeks the public including creditors, will know who they are. Frank Carreras, Commissioner of Income Tax is about to use his new weapon – ‘name and shame’ publication. This is the first time the measure is being used after being made legal under new tax laws. The publication of names will not be a surprise to the employers concerned. They will have owed the tax or Social Insurance for over three months and will have received various letters and warnings. People who pay up or make agreements in time will be spared.>
“There are several hundred employers affected,” Mr Carreras confirmed to the Chronicle though he also made clear that many who have been spoken to will settle. Under the law only employers owing more than £5,000 from over three months are tackled and although the law only requires they be given 14 days notice the Income Tax department has in fact given a much longer run in a bid to both collect and spare companies the embarrassment that will follow.

But for those who fail to pay, the Official Gazette – with sales likely to be boosted - will feel like a bad day in The Sun.
