Female addicts more likely to suffer domestic violence

Illustration only
BARCELONA The 14th annual Dual Pathology (addiction plus other mental illnesses) Workshops carried out at the Institute of Neuropsychiatry and Addictions of Barcelona's Hospital del Mar, which were held at the beginning of last month and attended by national and international experts, came up with conclusions that may be no surprise to any of the victims or their families. The main conclusion: domestic  violence and drug abuse are inextricably linked. Women drug addicts, says the paper issued by the Institute, are three times more likely to suffer physical or sexual abuse from their partners than their non-addict counterparts. (A more detailed article on this subject will soon be available on SpainInformer.com.)

Wife beater arrested in Jimena

JIMENA A man was arrested on Monday and is charged with domestic violence. The incident occurred around midday on Monday, according to witnesses. The couple, of Romanian origin, have been known to have frequent shouting matches, heard loudly by their neighbours on Calle San Sebastián. This time, however, things evidently got out of hand, for the woman, who was seen lying bleeding on the floor, was taken to hospital by ambulance and the man driven away in the back of a Guardia Civil vehicle. There is as yet no official notification of the incident, so we have no notice of the woman's condition or confirmation of the incident from the police. UPDATE: The woman is back in Jimena today, and, according to our sources, it seems she is not pressing charges.

Women's group takes care of 20 domestic violence cases each day

ALGECIRAS (Agencies) The Victoria Kent women's organization, which deals with domestic violence cases in the town on behalf of SAVA  (Servicio de Asistencia a Víctimas de Andalucía) takes care of an average of 20 women per day, according to its President, María Isabel García Revilla, who headed a silent demonstration at Plaza Alta (photo), as they do every last Tuesday of the month, to call attention to the drama of violence against females. After five minutes' silence in memory of the victims who died - 11 so far this year in Spain, and we haven't even come to the end of February yet (Important Note: As we write this item we hear on the radio that another three victims have been killed today by their partners!) - a local personality, politician, victim or García Revilla addresses the crowd that tends to gather round. "What we want each Tuesday," she says, "is for people to visualize the silent work we do at the association." (Note: The victim's emergency number is 116.)
