Madrid diverts traffic, Mayor targets goods vehicles

LA LÍNEA (Gibraltar Chronicle/Brian Reyes / Photo: EuropaSur) Alejandro Sánchez, the Mayor of La Linea, has once again upped the ante in his tussle with Madrid over control of border traffic. At the weekend the mayor personally ordered new road signs blocking all right turns on the municipal road to La Atunara, thereby preventing trucks from crossing the frontier through the commercial gate. Commercial vehicles must now queue with private cars to enter through the main crossing point. The mayor’s move was in response to steps by Spain’s Public Works Ministry to ease traffic flow leaving the border area. (Read the full story here)
