(CNBC) According to Global Finance Magazine, four major Spanish banks are among the top 50 safest financial institutions in the world. In fact, the magazine's ranking puts them in the top 30: Santander ranks 14, BBVA 21, Banesto 24 and La Caixa 28. This compares favourably with British banks as follows: HSBC 19, Barclays 34, Lloyds Group 41 and Nationwide 47. The 'World’s 50 Safest Banks' 2010 were selected through a comparison of the long-term credit ratings and total assets of the 500 largest banks around the world. Ratings from Moody’s, Standard & Poor’s and Fitch were used. Global Finance has published its “World’s Safest Banks” listing for 19 years and this ranking has become a recognized and trusted standard of creditworthiness for the entire financial world.
