'Give your face a lift' says Council

TARIFA As far as we know, these are NOT the words used to launch a campaign by the Council, with the support of the local small business association Asociación de Pequeños y Medianos Empresarios de Tarifa, APYMETA), to encourage home and business owners to clean up the front of their buildings in order to maintain the 'typical look' of the town. the campaign runs during May and June, and among other activities there will be a competition for the best fachada (façade, face, front of building) for a building painted white. More information may be obtained at the Town Hall.

Specialist rice cooks gather for new competition

LOS BARRIOS The first edition of the Certámen Gastronómico Maestros del Arroz, which brings together some of Spain's best rice cooking specialists, is to be held from today at the La Montera Hotel. Dishes ranging from a risotto of fennel with prawns and mango, by young chef Juan Rueda Santiago and scheduled for today, to the menu to be prepared on Sunday by Juan Antonio González Ruiz that includes a sweet rice with king prawns and baby squid. On Friday, Diego Rivero Collado and Fernando Torrejón Camacho, of Tarifa, present a seafood rice preceded by baby clams 'with a hint of olive oil', artichokes with jamón serrano cubes, and other delicacies. On Saturday it is the turn of Antonio Trillo Lara, who has worked at the Royal household and the Moncloa Palace, the seat of government.

Take a pic of your dog and help Spanish Stray Dogs

Local artist Tony Artenimas of www.artenimas.com has kindly donated us a hand painted pet portrait. The winner will get to choose the pet of choice to be painted. Verónica Rojas came in fourth in Se Llama Copla final

SAN ROQUE Despite the support she received from her home crowd, Verónica Rojas came in fourth in this year's final for the Se Llama Copla competition that was held on Saturday night (and about which we reported here). Fran Doblas, from Sevilla, came in first, and Anaraida Sánchez, of La Línea, was second. The latter was given a tumultuous welcome in her town, as did Verónica, who was in contention for the top spot until the very end but did not get enough votes this time.

Guadiaro River Photo Competition open now

(Press release) The San Pablo authorities announce the 5th edition of their annual Guadiaro River Basin Photo Competition, which is open to all ages and nationalities, professional or otherwise. The aim is get the best photos of the river and its basin, the subjects being landscapes, flora, fauna, natural, economic or cultural values, etc. Participants can send in as many photos as they like, as long as the printed format is on  20 x 30cm photo  paper or high resolution on a CD. The deadline closes on Tuesday, November 9 at 14.30, though mailed material will be accepted if it is stamped before that date. Prizes are €300 First Place, and €150 for Second. 'My Pet and I' photography competition

(Press release/Photo: 'Payo') The Guadalinfo centre of Jimena is organizing the fourth edition of it's 'My Pet and I' photography competition. Born at the village's centre, it has grown exponentially and now has a place on the whole Guadalinfo network in Andalucía, and receives entries from all five continents (competition details below). The aim is to promote respect for animals as well as the use of new technologies. Loli Segovia, who runs the centre and organizes the competition received the 2008 'Most Innovative' Guadalinfo Award from the Junta de Andalucía for her efforts.>
